Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk has mentioned that he is working on a new game which will probably come out sometime in 2012.

However, the last Tony Hawk game, Shred was a total flop and only sold 3000 copies when it launched.

Game publisher, Activision will no doubt be hoping to relplicate the success of the original Pro Skater games which sold by the bucketload.

Let’s hope that the next installment in the Tony Hawk series is more popular and sells like the Pro Skater series did.

Skate or Die!

It was the year 1987, and even the Super Nintendo was not yet available. Skateboarding games had not really been developed yet, until the Skate or Die game was released. It was completed by Electronic Arts, and was released on PC, Commondore 64, and the Atari system. Eventually Konami published it for the Nintendo, as it quickly became a very popular skate game. You might say it was also the first one.

Like other epyx games, players can compete in 5 skateboarding modes, either solo or multiplayer. You could play freestyle events, high jump, downhill skateboarding, and racing. My favorite was the downhill jam, which featured fast gameplay and intense skate tricks on the fly.

One of the funniest features of this skateboarding games is the characters. Rodney wears a purple mohawk and is covered in tattoos. He runs a skate shop. His son also skates, and you can play as Bionic Lester. I also remember the ski or die series being lots of fun. This game received positive reviews and was ahead of its time indeed. I can’t believe its still fun to play today.

Simpsons Skateboarding Series

One of my favorite all time shows is the simpsons. They have released many different video games over the years, one of the most fun being the simpsons side scroller which hit the arcades. I really loved playing this game. Now they have done something totally new and groundbreaking: Released Simpsons Skateboarding Games!

It became available on the Playstation 2, in the year 2002. The developers were known as the code monkeys, and this skate game was published by Electronic Arts. We see the town of springfield converted into a giant skate park, featuring the landmarks from the show. Like Moes Tavern, and Springfield Elementary. You can play as nine different simpsons characters, bart being the most talented skateboarder in the family. It includes excellent voice acting and atmosphere.

Where this game did not fare so well, is having good graphics, skateboarding tricks, controls, and overall gameplay. Some of the modes include doing freeskate, trick contests, and doing the races. You can unlock additional characters and levels, if you prove your skateboarding skills.

Tony Hawk Skateboarding Games

Of all the skateboard games we have covered thus far, tony hawks is by far the most popular and well known. And possibly the most well designed. This is the first game in the series, released in 1999 before the new millenium. It rapidly got released on the Nintendo 64, NGaga, and Dreamcast systems. Becoming the most recognized sports video game of all time.

In Tony Hawks pro skater, you mostly ride around perform tricks, grinds, and aerial stunts. The better your moves, the more points you score. And If you get enough points, you can not only perform new skateboarding moves and tricks, you also unlock new features of the game.

I enjoy playing in career movde, where you have 2 minutes to skate the park and collect the donuts. You must also collect points, so you need to pull off skateboard tricks while racing against the clock. The multiplayer modes include skate battles and graffiti wars.

Many different versions of Tony Hawk have been released for different consoles, and they are still under development today. Its been said tony has made over $50 million dollars being the sponsor of this skateboarding game, what a lucky guy!

Disney Skateboarding

This game is also known as disney all star sports, and was first released in 2002 by Konami. You can skateboard as mickey mouse, donald duck, and other classic disney characters, who you’d never expect to see featured in a skateboarding game! Although to be honest, the version released for gamecube did very poorly in the market, and it never received a single good review. Most hardcore gamers were complaining of the lack of features and boring levels. This is easy to understand.

But personally, I think its the greatest skateboard game ever to be released, as the tracks are just out of this world. Have you ever been to disney land? The game is like that, except on a skateboard. You can go off insane jumps, create your own parks, have skate battles, and complete missions. I believe it takes the sport to a whole new level. Overall I think the gameplay of this skate game is really top notch, and the music sets the mood nicely.
